Lingotto Musica OFF at the Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile

From September 24th to 26th, three chamber music concerts will take place in the Piazza of the MAUTO

The Lingotto Musica OFF concert series continues from September 24th to 26th with three chamber music concerts (all starting at 8:30 PM) that, for the first time, are part of the exhibition and cultural program of the Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile. Launched last July at the Museo Archivio Reale Mutua, this new initiative by Lingotto Musica brings classical music outside of its usual venues. The events at the MAUTO will feature a wide range of instrumental and vocal repertoires, with the goal of enriching the history of the automobile with new perspectives. The protagonists will be talented young ensembles and soloists, including the ensembles Running Flutes and Des Brass Quintet, the Coro G led by Davide Benetti, and the singer-songwriter Carlo Pestelli.

Composers and cars with the Running Flutes ensemble

The series opens on Wednesday, September 24th, with the Running Flutes ensemble. They will perform a curious mix of musical styles from the 20th century, including the final, grand season of Italian opera, the fast-paced rhythms of American musicals, and the warm Latin sounds of nuevo tango and bossa nova. Composed of former students from the Turin Conservatory, the group will explore all the timbral possibilities of the flute in various formations through unique transcriptions. The program includes the Triumphal March from Verdi’s Aida, Puccini’s aria “O mio babbino caro” from Gianni Schicchi, Gershwin’s symphonic poem An American in Paris, a suite from Bernstein’s West Side Story, the Spanish Dance from Falla’s La vida breve, and pieces like Oblivion and Desafinado by Piazzolla and Jobim.

The Brass Quintet from Bach to Hollywood

On Thursday, September 25th, the Brass Quintet will take the stage. Founded in 2023 by young musicians from various Italian conservatories, the quintet won the “Chamber Music with Original Repertoire” category at the Concorso per Giovani Interpreti – Città di Chieri that same year. The ensemble, which has already performed at the MITO SettembreMusica festival and the Salone Mondiale del Turismo, will present an ambitious and diverse program that blends Baroque tradition, melodrama, Hollywood cinema, and contemporary repertoire. The performance will feature Bach’s Fugue in G minor BWV 578, the Musetta’s Waltz from Puccini’s La bohème, and themes from film and animated classics by Rota, Morricone, Piovani, Bruns, and Williams. The program will also include selections from Jan Koetsier’s Kinderzirkus, as the composer was particularly renowned for his brass compositions.

A Tribute to the Resistance on the 80th Anniversary of Liberation

The series concludes on Friday, September 26th with a tribute to the Italian Resistance by Coro G conducted by Davide Benetti. This performance is part of the Note libere concert series, promoted by Sistema Musica to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Italy. The Turin-based youth choir, which has specialized in contemporary a cappella repertoire since 2003, will present a musical journey that weaves together individual and collective stories of the struggle against oppression. In a collaboration with singer-songwriter Carlo Pestelli, the ensemble will give voice to the stories of Federico García Lorca, an Andalusian poet killed by Franco’s forces, and Charles d’Orléans, who was held captive in England for 25 years. They will revisit Estonian traditions suppressed by communism through the music of Veljo Tormis and celebrate the courage of Leone Sinigaglia, a Jewish composer persecuted by the Nazi-fascist regime. The program will also include renowned partisan songs and songs by Fabrizio De André, timeless anthems of freedom and dignity that continue to inspire.
