Pre-concert lecture is presented by the musicologist and music critic Attilio Piovano at 6.30 PM at Sala Londra (free entry).

The queen of the keyboard Martha Argerich as soloist in Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major

Fourteen years after her last appearance at Lingotto with Mischa Maisky and the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester, Martha Argerich plays one of her favorite pieces, the Piano Concerto in G major. As one of the best performers of her generation, she won Bolzano and Ginevra Competitions and Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, starting a long artistic partnership with Claudio Abbado. Her career is triumphant. With a large repertoire, from Bach to Bartók, she collaborated with the most important directors and orchestras.

A tribute to Ravel on his 150th birthday

The evening opens with Le tombeau de Couperin, writted for piano in 1914 and transcripted for orchestra in 1919. His four movements are dedicated to the composer’s friends killed during the World War. The reference to the harpsicord player Couperin and the funeral eulogy (tombeau) sounds like a commemoration of the past and the present. Finished in 1931 alongside the Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, Piano Concerto in G major follows. This two different concerts express the stylistic maturity of Ravel and his special attention to Mozart and Saint-Saëns. The program closes with Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, transcripted for orchestra by Ravel in 1922 with an unforgettable fancy tone.
