Martha Argerich and Charles Dutoit are two titans, and their concerts together are a warm embrace. It’s always difficult to say who is more intrepid: she captivates and overwhelms with her indomitable spirit, while he crafts orchestrations of rare beauty. The wonders of Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major confirm that the queen of the piano is still firmly on her throne. Alongside her, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, conducted by Dutoit, continues its homage to the French composer, whose 150th birth anniversary falls in 2025, with the Tombeau de Couperin, a suite dedicated to his homeland and the friends lost during the Great War, and the colorful intensity of the orchestral transcription of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.
